Ilse Esther Hoffe May 8, — September 2, was a Jewish woman known for being the secretary and presumed mistress of writer Max Brod. Upon his death in , she received a large trove of materials relating to Franz Kafka, Brod's friend. Some of these were sold but most were controversially passed, unreleased to the public, to her two daughters after her own death. She was born in Troppau Opava. After the death of Brod's wife in , he grew very close to Hoffe.
The search continues in Eastern Europe and Israel. Kafka's missing writings consist of 35 letters written to Dora Diamant between — and up to 20 notebooks, representing the last year of his life. The 70 letters that Dora wrote to Max Brod. The name was given to them by Max Brod, Kafka's literary executor, to differentiate them from the regular quarto-sized notebooks Kafka used as diaries. Along with the octavo notebooks, Brod also found a series of extracts copied out and numbered by Kafka.
Publication When Brod published Kafka's diaries in he decided to omit the octavo notebooks as he considered their contents more philosophical and literary than the regular diaries Kafka kept. The Octavo notebooks were later included in a volume of fragments and uncollected writings published in , along with the numbered extracts. The notebooks first appeared in English in Dearest Father.
